Sept. 10, 1946
Dearest Ray,
Know what? It is now raining. The sun shining brightly and bingo!!! It has almost stopped now. I am on the Carmichaels’s porch in one of those big chairs. Ooops! The sun is out again.
Honey I miss you more and more. The more I see of everything that was familiar to us, the more I want you here with me.
Tis very hot down here. One good thing is the breeze even if that too is warm.
I have the room that your mom and Myles had. It nice but lonely and quiet.
The plane trip was very warm but outside of that wasn’t too bad except that I didn’t get much sleep at all. Around 6:30 Monday morning I had breakfast and they really served a nice one. I didn’t have any trouble with my ears at all this time. I think we flew quite low.
As soon as I got to the Carmichael’s I got a sickening lonesomeness for you. The house is exactly the same but the grounds are run-down and growing wild.
Mrs. Carmichael’s stepson - Waldo no less- is staying here until he starts at the university on the 27th. As yet I haven’t met him. He had left some of his breakfast so Mrs. C. Left me a pancake and coffee and talked with me for awhile. They’re not leaving on this trip yet, so I’ll be here. I saw Mr. C. For a few minutes and he was very nice. That’s almost all I’ve seen of the two of them as of yet. Mrs. C. Said she liked my ring very much and Waldo had just given his girl one very similar to it.
After my second breakfast I went to the Western Union and sent you that telegram. What time did you receive it? I couldn’t send you one from the dinky airport. I did find out about coming home though. If I keep my present accommodations I’ll leave around 12:55 am or so - that is around midnight the 22nd if they are back on Central time by then. If not one hour later then. I’ll arrive at Chicago somewhere around 9:00 in the morning Sunday the 22nd. I’ll have to find out more definitely about the time.
Monday afternoonI took the ferry to Palm Beach. Just myself and some old man. The skipper has m music on the thing now.
I was practically the only person on Royal Palm way. I took a short walk and discovered that almost everything was closed. I couldn’t find our little sidewalk cafe. Casablanca was closed and other familiar places.
I don’t know if everything was closed until the season or because of Mondays or the afternoon or what. Maybe I’ll see again. I took the ferry back and this time I was alone. I was dead on my feet but wasn’t ready to think and I wanted to do something to prevent anymore loneliness. Gez! It was a Roy Rogers!!! [drink] Pretty good too. I stopped for some cake and coffee, then went home. The night was beautiful. As I walked along looking up at the gorgeous moon over the palm trees and learning the wind all I could do was think of you.
This morning I ate breakfast at Packs, went shopping for a few odds and ends and stopped for a sandwich. I should have gone to the beach this afternoon but I wanted to write to you.
Now what in unholy hell is wrong? It’s got me beat.
There are quite a few outoftowners here in W. Palm Beach but not like when we were here together.
Well, darling, please write to me soon, will you?
I’m so lonesome for you!
I love you Shirley
