 Sept. 12, 1946



     My Darling,

     Gee it doesn’t sound like such a pretty picture down there now.  To me, no place would be very nice without you.  

      I was very happy to get a swell, long letter.  It made me feel good. (In a bad way). 

      Tom Alexander pulled his greatest trick on me so far.  Yesterday he comes up to me and says, “ Ray, I’m being dispossessed!  I’m too old for such things.  Ray, for God’s sake find me a place to live.”  I looked at him as if he were completely insane.  This was too much for little old me to handle so I seemed the advice of the smartest man in the world.  I told him what I wanted and he moaned, “Oh Jesus”.   Then he thunk a bit and asked if a suite at the Palmer House would be O.K.  I asked him if he thought he could do it and he said, “ God Damn it, If anyone can, I can.”  So he’s gonna call me tomorrow and let me know.  He was really swell to me and sounded so sympathetic to my problem.  He’s a good egg.

      For Pete’s sake what does “Waldo” look like?  

        Called Kroll today.  Your ring won’t be ready for two more weeks.  

      The last ride I took on the ferry was very sad.  Just like you said.  Gee, I’m lonesome for you now.  I wish you would enjoy yourself there.  At any rate get good and rested.  I’ll probably be very trying when you get home.  If possible I’ll meet you alone at the airport and we’ll have Sunday breakfast together.  

     Three rousing cheers for Roy Rogers and Trigger, the smartest horse in the movies.  At least you never have to think in his pictures.  

     Do you remember any of those nurses well enough to visit them?  

     Found myself whistling “Rum and Coca Cola” all day today.  

     By the way, Herb, Tom, Al, Frank, Elmer, and Marie have all asked me how you are doing.  The guys that met you think that you’re a swell gal.  They’re right.  

        Aw gee honey, I miss you more everyday.  I’m just waiting for your plane to fly you back to me.  

     Gonna call Bill tomorrow and check the date Saturday.  Have a drink at 3:00 Sat. Afternoon and will have one with you. 

     Good night sweetheart.  I’ll see you in my dreams.

  July 18, 1945. Tuesday Darling,   I suppose you've heard about my change of plans by now. Honestly honey, I don't know why I get into their screwy outfits. I was all set to go, had my bags packed and was just going to send some stuff home when the Pilot told me that the old Radar man was taking my place. This guy McQueen was on the crew when it cracked up about a month ago. He had a couple of broken vertabrae and was supposed to be in the hospital for months. He was released Saturday and went to see the Director of Training and managed to get back on the crew. He wasn't as well qualified as I was but because he had cracked up he was given the job. I didn't find out about all of this until yesterday at noon. Of all of the things that could have happened, that was the least expected. I wanted to stick with that crew. They were a good gang and they all knew their stuff. We got along good together. I feel like doing a lot of griping about it, but it won't do me any go...

July 29, 1945

  July 29, 1945   Darling,   Today has been a downright discouraging day. Got up at 0200 this morning, briefed at 0300 and had to wait till 0800 to get a ship. We flew for seven hours and I got back to barracks at 1600. Everything seemed to go wrong on the mission. We got off late, the ship was an old one and all the equipment was different and didn't work right. I rode further back than usual and it was so rough that I nearly got thrown out of the ship. The heating units went wrong and couldn't be shut off. Did you ever see a blast furnace with wings? To top things off our mutual friend "Ptomaine" had to put his two cents in. All in all it was a horrible mission.     I just heard about the B25 that crashed into the Empire state building. Of all the ungodly things to happen, that was tops. In spite of the fog it was still the pilots fault. He shouldn't have come in so low over the city. The same thing happened out here only it was a B29 and a mountain. The B29 l...

  Jan 22, 1945   My Darling,   I've been plotting and scheming again. Mom and Myles would like to go some place again while he is off but they haven't enough money, so I'm sort of raising a bank roll. When I get down to Boca I'm going to find a place for them to stay. Why don't you come along with them? It won't be so luxurious but you'll get two and a half or three meals a day, a nice cozy pup tent, and lots of sunshine and me. I should be able to get off evenings and weekends. We can go exploring together. No plans - No objective - just sort of wander around and hobnob with the natives. We could sit in the lobbies of very expensive hotels in Miami Beach. Maybe tackle a bit of deep sea fishing. During the day you can swim, ride, play tennis with Myles - Ha!' and do all sorts of things. The Post theater is only 15 cents and the P.X. probably serves delicious hamburgers. You can window shop famous Lincoln Road and even blow two bits at the Gambling Boat. ...
