 Dearest Tangerine, (heh, heh, heh)

If you were to come back down here, there are two ways you could remain a virgin till after you're married. One - if you married me within ten minutes after your arrival - Two - If through some type of major explosion I were to become decapitated in a major locale. Outside of those two ways I'm afraid you'll be quite unsafe with me. If you'd have been here on a couple of evenings these last two weeks I think you'd have learned to know me as the "wolf Man". Damnit woman, I like that sort of thing! I couldn't make you any promises knowing that I wouldn't keep them. Ain't it? However, due to the usual Army confusion, It isn't likely to take place. During the month of May it is exceedingly possible that I may be dropping you a picture postal card from Iwo Jima or thereabouts. There has been a complete shake up in schedules. As things stand I'm booked to finish up here around the end of April. Why the hell am I writing so small? From then on there is nothing definite. The promised "Last Leave" is pretty distant now, but there is still a chance. I'll probably know more about it in a couple of weeks. Outside of this, everything else could be arranged. I'll just about be clear with the world after next payday so we could dig up the money. May is the end of the season down here so you'd have a choice of places to stay. Because of that there should also be room on the trains. Honey, it would be wonderful and we could swing it if I were sure of being here. Until I know what's what why don't you just flitter around and find out about train schedules and all stuff like that there? If it turns out that I'm going to be around I'll let you know right pronto. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

Hey I've got an "if" story too. How's this?

If I were to get a leave and if you could get a week off and If it were proper (for your sake) How would it be for one week, we were to live at The Edgewater Beach Hotel. We wouldn't let anyone know where we were so we could be completely relaxed. We could spend a week in Chicago just like strangers on a vacation. The Edgewater has a private beach and all sorts of stuff to have fun with. We could dance in the Marine Dining Room or on the open air floor. They have gardens that sure look good in the moonlight and night boat trips on the lake. It would be almost like Palm Beach. Whaddayah think? Sound good? It sounds swell to me. Oh gee golly!

Say, I'm glad to hear that your Mom is up and puttering around. I'll bet she'll be O.K. from now on. Twitch her nose for me and give her a hello. That stuff about Adeline sounds juicy. Some evening we must discuss it more completely. It's fun to meet people once, form your own opinions and then find out what they are really like. Amusing but confusing!

A few words on this one subject, then I'll keep quiet. I hope the sailor does show up soon. I'd like to get that settled one way or the other before I go over. Call your cards right, Honey. It's a jack pot hand. I've got to know the answer before I leave. Okey doke?

For a hundred pounder you're a pretty nifty hunk of stuff.

I've about run dry now so I'll just hush up. Keep your powder dry and write double damn quick.

 Good Night Sweetheart

 Ray

I sent you a magazine from Palm Beach yesterday and have another I'll send tomorrow. They both are just chuck full of memories.

I made the rounds of our places in our tour. They aren't much without you. I'd rather have stayed on the post. I get sad all alone. Sunday I went to the show and saw "None But The Lonely Heart". I shouldn't ought to have done that. I was nearly in tears. (I was still a bit under the spell). After the show I tottered over to the lobby of the Pennsylvania and sat in a lonely corner. A woman sauntered up and asked me if I cared for a cup of tea. I shuddered but tried to be polite so I smiled beautifully and with much enthusiasm said quote - yes - unquote. The damn stuff tasted good so I had two refills. There was a full moon in the evening and I walked down to the lake and sat on a bench.
